This is pretty wild. I guess its a preview of his Glow In The Dark tour. Also features Daft Punk‘s first national television appearance in their 14 year history.

Here’s a link to the heart-felt rendition of “Hey Mama” that followed.

Also check his cocky yet kind of ill acceptance speech for rap album of the year. He dismisses the “stop talking” music to thank people for the support and love following his mother’s death.

Chan Marshall and the Dirty Delta Blues hit the Vic

Rolling through Chicago last night, Chan Marshall sang us a ditty that seemed to pretty much capture the atmosphere: “In Chi-Town, it’s a cold town”. She then went on to put on one of the warmest sets of this touring season yet. Playing songs from The Greatest, Jukebox and even What Would the Community Think, Cat Power tore up the vic with only one downside: the 10 pm limit on all ages shows prevented her from roling back on stage for an encore. She did, however, take the time to toss out some t-shirts, for which fans fought like bachlorettes for a wedding bouquet.

Check this video out for her band introdution from last night’s show:

madly and desperately in love with this woman,

Daniel Johnston at the Metro

Daniel Johnston
is back. Seemingly healthy, intelligible and with a pretty ambitious tour. Chicago’s Metro was packed last Wednesday for the proclaimed “best song-writer of all time”. Openers Office gushed at even being on the same stage with the man and the idiom “we love you Daniel” rang as a heartfelt chorus from the crowd of cultish fans the entire night.

Johnston started the set with his four string guitar crooning the classics off “Hi How Are You?” and “Songs of Pain”. Soon, he was accompanied by “a friend from college” and played crowd favorites off the reissue of “The Late Great Daniel Johnston” and a cover of the Beetle’s “You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away” (see video). The crowd went nuts as Daniel recounted a dream in which he was on trial for his own suicide. He explained, “I was in the back of the courtroom saying ‘No!, no!’ ……okay”. I guess…?

Members from Office and some other dudes came out after a brief seemingly unplanned intermission and jammed for a little bit while Daniel walked around showing his excitement.

Despite the love, Johnston cut his set short and left the stage in his typical overwhelmed fashion. With still about 4o minutes left for the set, the crowd started an encore chant that resulted in an emotional and shaky rendition of “True Love Will Find You In The End” (see video).

The short set left no one disappointed (accept the bored and confused girlfriends dragged out by their comic book fan-boy counterparts) and the aura of bizarre excellence that is Daniel Johnston lingered in the air with the same power that its had since 1988.

If you need to know how much Dilla meant to people in the world of hip-hop production take a look at this video from the tribute party Friday night. Thanks to Rappersiknow.com:

Also, here is link to some pictures from the show.

Doom in ATL

Pitchfork posted some live pics of MF Doom at Atlanta’s MJQ Concourse last night. They seemed glad he wasn’t lip syncing (like some of the Rock the Bells rumors suggest) but people still seem to think he’s sending an imposter to shows.

On the Stones Throw Message board one writes:

“Notice anything weird? Go back and check out photos of Doom from a year ago or whatever, look at music videos, hell, check out his acceptance speech for the MTVU woodie award from this year. The dude at the Atlanta show is definitely an imposter. There is no way that’s really MF Doom. The eyes are what really stand out to me. Those are not Doom’s eyes, I don’t care if he lost lots of weight or whatever. In order to go from looking like he did in that MTV woodie award video to looking like the dude in that photo he would have had to undergo extensive plastic surgery.
Am I crazy or does that not look like Doom at all?”

I think its most definitely him… I don’t think the villain would stand up all his colabs like the on stage.  We’ll see I guess.
